Basement Waterproofing The actual basement waterproofing requires three steps: drying the basement, sealing the basement, and fixing any remaining problems (like removing the mold, basement wall repair, and so on.) Drying the basement, as mentioned above, is generally a matter of pumping any standing water out and then using a powerful dehumidifier to dry up any wet spots that remain. The actual basement sealing is often a multi-step process by itself. It generally starts with plugging any cracks visible from the inside of the foundation and basement walls. A nice coat of waterproofing paint (NOT damp-proofing, but waterproofing) is the second part of the process. Then you polish it off by finding all of the holes (windows, ducts, pipes, etc.) between the inside of the basement and the outside, and caulk or otherwise seal around them.
Have fun with the staircase, it doesnt have to just be something that you ignore as you enter a room, but it can be what draws you to want to go there in the first place! Windows Not just in the basement, but throughout the whole home; windows seem to be forgotten. Sure, curtains, and window stickies are popular, but replacing and updating windows tend to be the homeowners last resort. Maybe they arent fun enough for you If thats the case, then have some fun! Windows can be a beautiful addition to your basement, even though most basements dont have too many windows; they do tend to have one. If that window has been around since the dark ages, odds are your energy bill could probably go down if you just replaced your window. Some older windows are no longer in good condition so air escapes when you want it to stay in the room.
3. Add Accessories Even though your basement is an extension of your home, it should function for your family as an oasis from the stresses of everyday life. The location of your basement isolates it from the rest of your house (and the rest of the world). We tend to think of basements as a safe place physically, since they are the place you run to for protection during dubious weather. However, a basement can also be a safe place emotionally. So, its appropriate for your basement to be decorated to reflect your personal tastes and passions. Fill it with the things you love (Note: this does not mean that you should clutter it up with junk that you simply cant part with.) Think about the activities that you enjoy doing in your spare time, and equip your basement accordingly. Set up a stereo so that you can listen to your favorite music. If you like to play cards, set up a table for this purpose.
If your home has space in the underground that is left unfinished during construction, you would have probably used that space as a dumping area to stuff various items. However, what many people do not realize is that their unfinished basement can be converted into an attractive living space with some effort. If you have not considered finishing your basement, you should do so to enjoy the extra space you have been wasting all these years. Basement remodeling significantly increases the resale value of your home, because anyone will want a professionally finished basement. Remodeling the basement is not an easy task, because you have to first come up with an idea of what you want to do with your basement. The walls and floors will be already in place, but after years of usage without any maintenance, moulds and mildew might have formed. Repairing the walls, ceiling and floor are often one of the major tasks involved in basement remodeling. A new foundation need not be laid for remodeling the basement and hence, you can start working on other aspects of the project.
